Member update – APT Courses From WA Now Available Nationwide

Candlelight Farm, in conjunction with Skills Strategies International, are now offering Cert I, Cert II, Cert III and Diploma Permaculture courses, as well as the Permaculture Demonstrator Skills Set for those who wish to teach CI and CII in schools or community organisations.
CI and CII have been developed with VET in schools as the focus. Bold Park School in WA is currently delivering CII, and there have been three workshops for teachers this year, explaining the courses and outlining the benefits for schoolchildren. Interest is growing so it is only a matter of time before other schools offer these too.

School teachers who have done a PDC are able to deliver CI and CII, but there is also the Demonstrator Skills Set which involves 4 units from CIII to provide some good background knowledge and skills for VET delivery.
CIII Permaculture is ideally suited to those who have undertaken a PDC and wish to broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding. The course is very practical-orientated and students learn about propagation, pest control, irrigation, construction, soils, site assessment, impacts of weather, organic crops, permaculture products and integrated plant and animal systems. Fifteen units are typically undertaken over one year.
The Diploma Permaculture is a course for those who wish to become designers and consultants. Twelve units are undertaken over a year or so, and include both rural and urban designs, managing projects, strategic planning, field research, managing soils and erosion, advising clients and using particular species in design work.
We can also provide Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment for those practitioners who have a wealth of knowledge and experience but have not been able to undertake a course so far. You can RPL for CIII, Demonstrator Skills Set or Diploma.
For more information, RPL application forms, or details about buying particular units or whole courses so they can be offered in other states please contact Ross Mars on rossmars@waterinstallations.com

Permaculture Education Offerings Past Present and Future

Calling all students and teachers of permaculture at all levels. Permaculture Australia’s Education Team is working on an interactive web page using this snail graphic:

We hope to populate the page with an inventory of all courses past and present in all the categories on the snail. To do this we will need your help to review the page as it is developed and to send us feedback and suggestions.
Some categories (such as PDC) will need to be organised by State, and probably even by venue or year, or some mechanism for identifying courses. It is a tall order but something that has been called for for many times.
For current courses, we will link to member information on the Permaculture Australia webpage only, and for past courses we will be looking for articles and other useful information.
In tandem with this initiative, and in order to identify future needs, we will be undertaking a national survey and we ask that you help us disseminate it far and wide. The more complete the responses, the more likely we are to inspire solutions and the establishment of new courses.
We look forward to developing a rich and inspiring educational mycelium with your help.

APT news from WA

Story and photos by Ross Mars, February 2018

Accredited Permaculture Training is up and running in Western Australia, through Skills Strategies International. The first CIII was delivered by Ross Mars last year, and this has expanded to another CIII and the first Diploma this year. During last year’s CIII course, students also undertook AHCPER321 (Training small groups) and were able to achieve the Permaculture Skills Set. This qualification was the first time it was successfully offered in Australia.

One student during that course is now delivering CII Permaculture at Bold Park School. Yet another first for WA!

Currently three people are helping deliver the CIII and Diploma this year, with the aim of being more involved in the future.

Calling all APT assessors

Permaculture Australia is looking for experienced APT assessors to help with a paid project…

APT Assessment Guide Writing Project

Have you worked as a Trainer and Assessor in the Vocational Education and Training system?

Perhaps you were on the APT Approved Teachers Register?

Permaculture Australia is looking for people who have a thorough understanding of the Training System and of Accredited Permaculture Training (APT) to help write new Assessment Guides for RTOs interested in offering our qualifications. RTOs will be able to purchase these guides and PA will use the money for further APT development work.

Our project aims to spread the funds we have available across our community, so developers will be paid per unit completed, and there will be a timeframe in which the work needs to be completed.

If you would like to be a developer, please join us!

Please send some information about your background and experience to Beck Lowe at beck@cydoniapermaculture.com.au

APT has recently become part of the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation & Land Management Training Package (AHC16).

For more information:

We are hoping to complete the project over the next 2-3 months, so if you have the skills and can spare a few hours a week, we would love to hear from you.
