David Holmgren, Keynote Speaker at APC13
It’s all getting very exciting! We have just secured Keynote addresses from Permaculture co-originator David Holmgren and ABC Gardening Australia presenter Josh Byrne.
David will be speaking on “Retrosuburbia: revitalising the landscapes and communities that will raise the next generation”. His talk will focus on the following questions:
- Why retrofitting, not new build, should be the focus of most permaculture design.
- Why the suburbs should be the focus of most permaculture design.
- Why building better households rather than houses should be a strategic focus of permaculture activism.
- Why garden and urban agriculture has such a strong future in a world of climate chaos, peak energy and economic contraction.
David will highlight a very diverse range of DIY action in the suburbs with and without the permaculture label.

Josh Byrne, Keynote Speaker at APC13
Following on from David Holmgren’s opening address, Josh’s talk will focus on “Mainstream application of Permaculture principles in commercial and civic projects”. Josh will showcase some of the projects his team have designed and implemented – from community gardens, adventure playgrounds and recreational playspace to large-scale housing developments and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
These keynote addresses will take place as the first sessions on Wednesday morning at APC13.

Update 23 December 2015…
You can now register and subscribe to the APC13 News and Updates. At least subscribe then you can be sent relevant info as it comes to hand. Please also join up on our facebook group, as we intend to post regular info about the program of events.
While you can register you can’t finish by paying for things such as the convergence, tours and courses. We are still sorting out the payment gateway and hope to resolve soon.
The website now has some info about the four different tours on offer, as well as the various courses before and after. We are not offering a PDC beforehand, as part of the formal APC13 program, and would encourage everyone to attend a local one in their own state or region. However, Greg Knibbs is organising one just before, in case overseas visitors need to do PDC.
You can now send in your abstracts should you wish to present. The guidelines and deadlines are listed on website.
We are looking at presenters and workshops for the public open day on Sunday (The Expo). If you have suggestions or can run a hands-on workshop please let us know.
There is an early-bird registration (end June). If anyone has words of inspiration please send them along to me to add to the fantastic statements already on website.
Hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Xmas and New Year.

8 Dec, 2015 | Permaculture Gatherings

Story by Ross Mars, Perth, October 2015
Air travel is recognised as one of the highest producers of carbon dioxide, and so contributes significantly to an individual’s greenhouse gas emissions. Most airlines offer customers a chance (and choice) to pay a little more to offset their travel. Unfortunately most people seem to ignore this offer and I also suspect the (small) cost increase in an airfare is really well below the true cost.
While it would be great if all permaculture practitioners automatically considered accepting the carbon offset addition to a fare, it may not be possible to do so for a large number of reasons. While all such schemes are registered by the Australian Government and the funds raised are given to legitimate organisations for tree planting and other endeavours, Perth is considering donating part of a participant’s Convergence fee to local organisations to enable worthwhile food-based and other revegetation projects to be funded.
Applications are invited…
Applications are invited for consideration for any planting schemes that require funding.
Please write and submit:
- a short description of your project
- outcomes expected
- funds sought and timeline for implementation.
Your proposal should be submitted before June 30, 2016 to…
You can go online and find any number of calculators to work out the carbon produced by travel from one city to another and to also give you some estimate of cost. We intend finding ways in which we can reduce everyone’s carbon footprint to attend the Convergence in Perth October 2016.
Won’t you join us?
26 Oct, 2015 | Permaculture Gatherings

Submissions are now open for presentations, workshops and specific sessions during APC13. You are invited to submit a half to one page abstract of your presentation outline for consideration. A selection panel will review all submissions and chose those that will complement each other and provide a balance, depth and spread to discussion on the themes of the convergence.
Theme: Designing for resilience
The overall theme for APC13 is Designing for Resilience, but a number of sub-themes as headings for concurrent sessions have also been mooted and include:
- design
- resilience,
- best practice
- tools and techniques
- leadership
- community
- research
- education
- future possibilities.
Important dates and guidelines for submissions
- Submissions of abstracts by May 31, 2016.
- Notification of acceptance by June 10, 2016.
- Presentations should be 30-45 minutes, with final time determined once all submissions provided and the timetable can be developed.
- A number of workshops are planned for the open-to-public Expo on Sunday October 2. You are invited to offer to run a hands-on workshop on some aspect of permaculture practice. Your session should be informative and engaging, as we anticipate people with little permaculture background may attend.
- Your presentation and final submissions of full paper will only be accepted from participants who have formally enrolled in the convergence.
- Your full paper or presentation or workshop outline and outcomes must be submitted by August 31, 2016 to enable all presentations to be published and made available to participants at APC13.
- Deadlines will be strictly adhered to.
Let’s all make this convergence a resounding success by supporting our endeavours to provide a full and varied program.

21 Dec, 2014 | Permaculture Gatherings
Story by Russ Grayson reporting from Penguin, Tasmania
To get to this place we found the narrow lane we had been told to look out for and carefully descended the steep, winding, gravel road that took us through the tall timber into the gully below. There, we encountered the Penguin Community Garden and the organising meeting of the APC12 (the twelfth Australasian Permaculture Convergence) crew.
Meeting the crew gave us confidence that they will pull off a great convergence here on Tasmania’s Bass Strait coast, in this small town that hugs the shoreline and where in the morning you hear birds call, goats bleat and chooks cluck.

In the forest — the mudbrick building at Penguin Community Garden — what a place for a planning meeting. This is the site for the Organic and Sustainable Living Festival.
A big picture focus
APC12 focuses on, to quote from the website, “…honouring the past achievements of permaculture and challenging us to find ever more creative ways to transform the future to a sustainable world.”
APC12 will ask where are we now in permaculture and what futures could open for us. These are big-picture things that permaculture practitioners would probably do well to think about so as to define an effective role for the design system as we enter the Anthropocene epoch — the Age of Humankind — a time when humanity has a dominatng influence on the earth.
Applications close — soon
The convergence is scheduled for March 10-12, 2015, with the following two days set aside for self-guided tours.
The preceding three days — March 7-9 — are for the Organic and Sustainable Living Festival, the Permaculture Expo (a day open to the public) and the Introduction to Permaculture Part 1. Then, on the 9th, Introduction to permaculture Part 2 and the Australasian Permaculture Convergence welcome dinner.
March is the month when the island state’s weather is at its calmest and mildest (I’m not trying to alarm you, but bring a warm pullover and a waterproof jacket — just in case).
Applications from presenters and workshop leaders are already coming in, said Caroline Smith, one of the organisers looking after the program (with Kerry Dawborn, Caroline was an editor of the book, Permaculture Pioneers). So, too, are registrations, said the person looking after that — and, no, you won’t get in by turning up on opening day, cash in hand.
Here are the important dates:
Applications to hold a workshop, presentation or other activity close: January 12
Registrations to attend APC12 close: January 31 — this is a prepaid event, tickets not available at the door
Homecoming
APC11 took place in the town of Turangi, on New Zealand’s North Island. APC10 was on Far North Queensland’s Atherton Tableland.
APC12 is a homecoming for the permaculture design system. Holding it here in Tasmania is significant because it was almost 40 years ago that the design system was born on this island (I still recall then, when living in Hobart, being handed a copy of the book, Permaculture One).
I think it comes from Carl Jung’s idea of the hero’s journey, the saying that you go away, and when you return to where you started you really see the place for the first time. So it will be for the permaculture design system this March in Penguin, when, after its long and continuing journey across our land and that of Aotearoa (New Zealand), the APC returns to this green island, where, all that time ago, permaculture made its modest start.
