"Things are far to late and far too bad for pessimism" On Saturday 31 March 2012 I attended a presentation by Frances Moore Lappe on her new book "Ecomind". Frances is the author of 18 other books on how we can address the problems of world hunger. She sees the problem as not one of scarcity but of inequitable distribution of food. She questions "Why are we TOGETHER creating a world that we as INDIVIDUALS would never choose? She explained that we see things through a mental map that defines how we interpret the world. We need to change the way we look at problems and adopt an ecomind. Frances outlined what she calls the Scarcity Mind which is typified by separateness, stasis and scarcity. The Scarcity mind sets up the Spiral of Powerlessness and is typified by three conditions proven to bring out the worst in us: concentrated power, lack of transparency and blaming "the other". To break from the Spiral of Scarcity we need to adopt the Spiral of Empowerment which is typified by three conditions proven to bring out the best in us: continuing dispersion of power, transparency and mutual accountability. She concluded with examples of where individuals had started local programs which spread worldwide with small groups achieving great things cooperatively.
