Story by April Sampson-Kelly, December 2014
There’s no better excuse for traveling overseas than attending an International Permaculture Convergence (IPC). What you expend in aviation fuel you gain in knowledge, insight and potentially productive network links.
That’s been the experience of Mt Kembla permaculture educator, April Sampson-Kelly, as she explains…
“When I went to the first National Permaculture convergence in North America, at Harmony Park, it was informative and fun. The weather was less so but that was overcome by the spirit of the people, which was great, and the tours that very insightful and well organised.
“The food was fabulous — a culinary oasis in the land of carbs, fats and sugars. The interactions were frank and highly productive. There were workshops on wild foods, women in permaculture, inclusiveness and design course standards, among others.
“Standards do need addressing. I discovered quite a few topics such as understanding classical landscape profiles and preparing for catastrophe are not addressed in a typical Permaculture Design Course in North America”.
Here are some links to photos and stories from the tours…

On to India
International Permaculture Convergence 2015 is to take place in the UK, and that for 2017 in India.
A website has been set up describing the IPC India event and tours associated with it. You can register your interest in attending or helping with the event now.
It’s good that IPC India has received support from IPC UK.
