      It worked fine going directly to YouTube, thanks.

      Interesting that he didn’t mention compressed air as a process to generate power, which has been proven to be viable in the 1930s, as Bill M has pointed out in PC Design Manual (p 520?).

    Hi Dhammadaasa…
    Compresses air can be a source of stored energy, however it requires another energy source to compress the air. The primary energy source that compresses the air could be hydro or heat energy, however it may be more efficient to turn the energy of moving water directly into electrical energy using a small hydroelectric turbine. Likewise, converting solar energy directly into electricity via photoelectric panels may be more efficient.

    Stirling engines were a compressed air technology invented some time ago, yet they too require a means to compress the air.

    I was sitting with a group of people at The 2008 Australasian Permaculture Convergence when Bill Millison said to me, pointing to David Holmgren, “He doesn’t believe compressed air is an energy source”, or something very similar, referring to David refuting Bill’s promotion of compressed air for energy. David explained that compressed air was an energy storage medium rather than an energy source because it required that primary energy source to compress the air in the first place.

      Yes, technically David’s criticism is correct. Despite that, using falling water to compress the air the way Bill describes in the Manual has the benefit of no mechanical parts, thus it is low technology and thus more sustainable on the long term.

        Are you sure moving water can compress air wothout moving parts in the compressor? Irrespective, compressed air technology is clearly a means of converting the energy of falling water and storing it as compressed air where there is sufficient head of water to do that.

        Deploying the technology is likely to run into the same limitation that the agency I worked for found in constructing microhydroelectric systems in the Solomon Islands, that it is dependent of a year-round supply of moving water and the right geological characteristics for cnstructing a weir.
